Czechia managed to qualify for their eighth straight European Championships by finishing second in their qualifying group, level on points with table toppers Albania. They fared pretty well in their last outing three years ago; they may have finished behind England and Croatia in the group stages, but as one of the best third placed finishers, the Czechs were underestimated by the Netherlands in the Round of 16 and went through with a 2-0 win, but ultimately were eliminated by Denmark in the quarter finals. Finalists in 1996 and semi finalists in 2004, the Czechs haven’t had much to celebrate in recent years, but should be quietly confident of making it out of their group this summer.
Player to Watch
Tomas Soucek
As one of just two players to play every minute for Czechia in qualifying, Soucek was instrumental towards ensuring qualification. He was the joint top scorer, and has had a pretty decent season for his club in West Ham too. Soucek actually moved into tenth place in the country’s all time goalscoring charts during qualifying and could move even higher with a decent performance this summer.
