Best Performance

Australia were placed in a tough group in qualifying, having been pipped with Japan and Saudi Arabia, but they did manage to finish second in Group C to ensure automatic qualification to their sixth consecutive World Cup. They had their best World Cup campaign four years ago, where they picked up two victories for the very first time, defeating Tunisia and Denmark in the group stages. They were knocked out by eventual winners Argentina in the Round of 16 to match their furthest progression in a tournament - in 2006, Australia were knocked out by Italy at the Round of 16 stage, who went on to lift the trophy.

Jackson Irvine
Jackson Irvine

Irvine has been at St Pauli in Germany since 2021, and has seemingly had no problem adapting to the Bundesliga following promotion in 2024. Featuring in almost every game for the club for the past five seasons, the thirty three year old midfielder also featured in the most matches in qualifying for the World Cup, where, in 14 matches, he was joint top scorer for the Socceroos with three goals. With only seven goals conceded in 16 games in total, defensive solidity will be vital for Australia this summer, something Irvine also contributes massively towards.
