After not qualifying for three consecutive World Cups, Paraguay are finally back in the World Cup. Having qualified for four straight finals between 1998 and 2010 and making it out of the group stages in all but one of those appearances, it’s quite surprising that it has taken so long for them to qualify once again. In South American qualifying, the top six sides automatically qualify, and though Paraguay did finish the campaign in sixth, only one point ended up separating second placed Ecuador and Paraguay by the end of the campaign. They will be looking to put a disappointing Copa America campaign behind them from 2 years ago where they lost all three group stage matches.

Diego Gomez currently plays at Brighton where this season he has established himself as a key centerpiece in midfield for the Premier League side. He moved to Brighton a year and a half ago from Inter Miami where he played alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. At the age of 23, Diego Gomez already has twenty three caps for his country and was the only scorer in Paraguay’s 1-0 win over Brazil in qualifying, and most recently scored the only goal in a friendly win over Greece in March. In the 2025/26 season, he was the top scorer in the EFL Cup thanks to a four goal haul against Barnsley in round three.
