Best Performance

Ecuador qualified for their fourth World Cup by finishing in fourth place in an extremely competitive South American qualifying section, the highlight of which would have undoubtedly been a 6-1 demolition of Colombia. They are a nation that have only ever qualified out of the group stages once, back in 2006 in Germany, though they were knocked out by England at the Round of 16 stage. Ecuador reached the Quarter Final stage of the Copa America a year ago though were knocked out by eventual champions Argentina.

Fixtures

Player to Watch

24 year old defender Estupinan played the most minutes in qualifying for Ecuador, featuring in 17 of their 18 matches. For his club, Estupinan helped Villlarreal lift the Europa League trophy 18 months ago, and has been a permanent fixture in the heart of the Spanish giants’ defence for the last 3 seasons. Only Brazil and Argentina conceded more goals than Ecuador in qualifying, and his leadership at the back will be key to Ecuador making it out of Group A.
