Qualification for the World Cup has long eluded Turkiye, who, in their last appearance 24 years ago, managed to reach the semi finals, only to be eliminated by eventual champions Brazil. They went on to defeat South Korea in their own back yard to pick up the bronze medal, but have endured much heartache until this campaign. They finished second to Spain in Group E, and then went on to defeat Romania and Kosovo, both by 1-0 scorelines, in the play offs thereafter. Despite qualifying for the last three European Championships, the latest in which they managed to reach the quarter final stage, it is on this world stage where they will be hoping to make an impression - hopefully by going one further than their last outing.

Arda Guler

Guler epitomises the upcoming generation of Turkish youth - the 21 year old is a regular feature for Real Madrid. He was only 17 when he made his debut for Turkey and played a key role in his nation’s run to the quarter finals, becoming the youngest debutant to ever score in the tournament’s history, and was the first teenager to score on his EUROs debut since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2004.
