Formerly known as Zaire, The Democratic Republic of Congo took the long route towards qualifying for their first ever World Cup, at least as DR Congo, and after finishing second in their qualifying group in Africa behind Senegal, Congo defeated Cameroon and Nigeria to ensure that they made it to the final qualifying stage where they faced Jamaica. An extra time goal in Mexico was enough to see Congo win 1-0 on the day. Though it's their first World Cup in over 50 years, DR Congo have qualified for six of the last seven AFCONs, and they have only failed to get out of the group stages once during that run. Earlier this year, they were knocked out by Algeria in the Round of 16, and only failed to win their group on goal difference. But they do have a few well known players in their squad and should not be a side to be taken lightly this summer.

Player to Watch
Yoane Wissa
Yoane Wissa

By his standards, Wissa has not had a particularly impressive season since his big money move to Newcastle United last summer, mainly due to a knee injury that saw him miss the first 4 months of the season. The 29 year old striker has eight goals in thirty six appearances for his country, but the good news for DR Congo is that he has featured regularly in the second half of the season, even if it was mainly as a substitute, but he should be fit enough to lead the line for his nation. There are other players with Premier League experience in the squad, and they should not be a side to be taken lightly.
